Domaine Karydas

Konstantinos Karydas built his single-vineyard Naoussa winery on 21 stremmata (2.1 hectares) of land in 1980. For years the grapes were sold to the Boutari family for their own production. Now Karydas has gone independent. His immaculately kept Xinomavro vines lie on the hill of Gastra, exposed due north and separated by a dirt road from the south-facing Melitzanis vineyard. The altitude is 200 meters and the sand, clay and limestone soils are noted for their good drainage. Konstantinos’s son, Petros, trained as a graphic artist and worked briefly in advertising before joining his father’s business. “Unlike other Naoussa estates”, he explains, “we believe our wine is best suited to one year’s ageing in small, 225 liter casks. Also we do not use Limousin oak-rather, a mixture of Allier and Nevers with a preference for medium toasting.”
